Willikers.

So I'm trying to figure out what I'm wearing to see 2011 to the door, but I'm finding it a bit more difficult than I thought it was going to be. I'm not sure how the District of Columbia handles their new years eve parties, but I just need to make sure that I'm not under dressed. After having a few conversations with my DC peers, I see that taking new years casually is a huge faux pas, so I need to make sure that I do anything but casual. I don't want to stunt, but I definitely want to keep it gee. Maybe I'll throw up some pictures of how it goes.

Just like how I threw up some pictures of the Fly Union show... haha.

Hom(e)age.

So, Christmas is officially over, and I hope that everyone that celebrates it had a wonderful day. I hope that gift giving went well, and I hope that the dinner was exquisite, the conversation jovial and the music tasteful. I've had a wonderful evening with wonderful people, which reminded me of the Christmas days of my past. However, what reminds me more of my previous Christmases is good jazz music. I understand not everyone is a huge fan of jazz music, but there is nothing more tasteful than jazz through the speakers while you soak up the intellect of your peers during the holidays. That's why when New Years Eve rolls around, I want you all to know that through my speakers, John Coltrane will be playing. I will be wearing an evening jacket, with the perfect ensemble, prepped and ready for the new year. I've never done anything big for the new years, so I don't see myself going that crazy this year either. However, I do plan to use my time wisely, and list all of my favorite things about 2011.

Cocoa.

So as the holiday season is coming to its climax, it's time that we start discussing what it is that we are actually going to do on the day when we gather. Will there be a divine feast, gift giving then drunken buffoonery? Perhaps there will be a long night of drinking with the occasional snack before falling into bed topless and waiting to make your last reckless move of the year. People take the end of the year very differently. Some see it as a chance to let loose; some see it as a chance to tighten up. Either way, there is some sort of change that has to happen. There is something about the holiday that makes us want to be a different person. We can wear different clothes, or cut our hair, or even decide to go to the gym, but there is something that has to be 'better' about us. I'm not sure why, but I can assume that with a new year comes the idea of new found time. With 366 days (yeah, 2012 is a leap year) ahead of us, there is a massive list for us to collect and incorporate into our lives.

I think it's beautiful.

Sure, many people don't need to change, and are perfect the way they are in the eyes of their friends and family. However, someone's want to better themselves is something I can truly admire. The constant need to achieve a 'greater than' of themselves and the situation that they exist in is what makes us as human beings so incredible. It's more than just survival. It's evolution.

However, I can't say that we only look forward. There are things about us that make us who we are, and we can't forget them. For example: last year, around this time, a friend showed me a song that I knew that I loved the first time I heard it. It's just a cover of another song that I like, but this cover is so different (despite being the same song, haha) that it makes it seem like something brand spankin' new. It was one of her gifts to me, now I'm giving it to you.

Enjoy, and happy holidays. C=

Two amazingly tailored tweed suits that simply ooze swank. These passed few days I've been tempted to buy a suit from the sketchy store down the corner. The salesmen in there are experts at their craft. However, the materials and 'cool factor' don't really add up to these two pictures. From the perfect accessories (e.g. frames, skateboard, tie bar etc.) to the perfect color coordination, these guys really knock it out of the park with their similar looks. Even their poses sum up it up. "I'm wearing the perfect outfit and I know it."

I'm so jealous it hurts.

This video is pretty 'hip.' Don't you agree?
So Christmas is right around the corner, and I hope that everyone is doing all that they can to make sure that they are going to be occupied. If you're not spending time with your family, spend time with your friends. If you're doing neither... then more power to you. F**k the system and all that noise. Once your ad strategy is to poke fun at your own product: you've reached the level of genius. V-dubs are still popular today, and with the new model having been released this year, it gives us another thing to miss about 2011. If you haven't seen one yet, I've taken care of it for you; just look here.

Dweeb.

It was over 60 degrees fahrenheit outside tonight. Today is (was) December 15th. What? It doesn't make sense to me that I can walk outside with a light jacket on and a long sleeve sports shirt and be hot. It doesn't make sense that despite that when a bus drives passed me, that the breeze is soothing. This doesn't make sense to me at all. Christmas day is literally ten days away, and I can see myself being more comfortable in shorts. I'm not in the tropics. I'm not near the equator. I'm in Washington, DC. What? Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. Snow has fallen once this year, and it lasted for a few hours. It feels like the end of spring more so than the second quarter of winter. I'm just hoping that January through March isn't going to recycle all of the fury that December normally dishes out; with interest. For now however, I am going to keep my jacket open, and keep cheerful music ringing through my tattered ear phones. Specifically, I was revisiting one of my favorite albums from high school. This album means a lot to me. It's aged well, and reminds me a lot of what it was for me to be a teen in the early 2000's. I used this album to make mixtapes for girls in school (like, a bunch of music put into one cd... an actual mix tape). I used this album to make sure that I kept my grades up to par. I used this album to give me courage to give said girl a mixtape in the first place. So on and so forth.

If you know anything about me, you know that I'm a HUGE N*E*R*D fan. I have every single one of their albums, and would follow Pharrell Williams into the coldest circle of hell and back. This albums is the reason for my love/obsession with them. They make music that speaks to my soul, and I feel like they honestly influenced a great deal of people with their music. You can tell when someone is an N*E*R*D fan, just by having a conversation with them. You can tell what they're in to, or what kind of people interest him, and it's all because of three guys with skittle-colored trucker hats. Here's a small ode to one of my top five bands. Oh, and be careful when you visit their website... you might go insane. www.n-e-r-d.com

Idolwild.

I think I may have stated this previously; but I love Nick Wooster. Here's a little remembrance of him that I found while stalking viewing his website, nickwooster.com. I think this picture sums up what I love about him. Considering that the majority of information that have on him comes from various written interviews and features, it builds an air of mystery around him that makes you just want to walk up and talk to the guy. He's cordial, creative, polite and intelligent. What more could you ask for? I don't want to idolize him. After all, he a human being after all. Instead I want to show what it is that he represents. Without having ever spoken a word to me, other than a couple words over twitter (drool), it's clear that he is grasping my attention. It's something that is 100% admirable. Enticing to the eye and entrancing to the ear lobe. He's more than just an icon to me, but a life coach, haha.

Swag me out. Swag me out. Don't give a f**k. Swag me out.
I think it's remarkable how we can go from play to work and vice versa in similar clothing nowadays. Being able to pull something like that off is the true definition of a versatile wardrobe: being well/appropriately dressed for any occasion. When you can dress int he dark, and come out looking good, you know you've gotten there.

Post Script. I'm going to check out one of those sketchy suit stores in Georgetown tomorrow... I'll let you all know how it goes. Wish me luck~

Saturday.

I know that this is kind of old, but I'm still shocked by the kind of clothing J. Crew is putting out there. For not really being a 'designer' label, they are putting out the kind of content that a guy that wants to stand out is looking for. I've always been a fan of the clothes, but not of the prices. Still, if you can afford it, J. Crew is not one to disappoint the fashion conscious man of whichever age. These images are just samples from their September 2011 show, so if the rest of the catalouge is like this, I'm excited to see what I can save for, haha.

Enjoy, and check it out at www.jcrew.com

Obsidian.(Blu.)

First and foremost I would like to express my immediate apologies for the deadening of this blog. All good things must come to an end. This has never been more true in the instance of Origami Citizen. However, all great things come back. Learn from the mistakes of yesterday to build a better tomorrow. Well tomorrow has arrived, and so has this blog. I'm ripe with muse, inspiration and willingness. The only thing I lack now is time, so posts will not be as frequent as they once were. This is a bittersweet change however. Where once you might have been overfed with content, now it gives you the chance to savor it a bit more. If you're eager to learn a bit more about existence from behind my eyes, then you'll find this a bit more satisfactory. Origami Citizen is back, ready to unfold a bit more anti-prosaic thinking into your lap.

To get things started, i'm going to post a video that I recently viewed and fell in love with. If you know anything about hip-hop, then perhaps you've heard of Blu. If not, then there's a first time for everything. This video is probably my favorite video since 'Yonkers' but for a completely different reason. If this video freaks you out...

Thursday.

Watch The Throne was released a few days ago. I'm just getting around to listening to it. To celebrate its release, GQ released a Jay-Z v Kanye West fashion battle to decide which of the suave-spitting MC's effect the hip hop fashion world the most. While GQ allowed the couple to trade blows with their style, they used an image that reminded me of a Kanye that I had forgotten even existed. Do you recall Kanye West's hiatus? The dipped out of the social spotlight during a very complicated year of heartbreak? When he returned he did so with the highly underrated album 808's and Heartbreaks which still gets an incredible amount of play on my iPod. With that came the craziest, and most influential style phase that I have seen in the world of hip-hop. The famous picture of Yeezy sporting a plaid, grey suit, white shirt, no tie, white sneaks and the iconic red heart lapel embodied his style for the most part. The hiatus was accompanied by a heroic, transient beat in his music that would rip the soul out of every listener that would actually pay attention. Stunning videos such as: Amazing, Love Lockdown, Paranoid and Mr. Hudson's Supernova to name a few were symbols of what it was that was really coming out of the super-creative phase in the rapper's life. It was this phase however that really let me appreciate what it was that made Kanye, Kanye. Taking the opportunity to do something other than rap, it made him really something that many close-minded people couldn't grasp anymore. In fact, it made him something that no one could grasp. While not giving the artist the status of a deity, he certainly gave us something to think about when listening to music, reading magazines and picking our ensemble for the day. However, knowing that the man singing about a heartless woman was also the same man who made a song about a fellatio workout proves his diversity, and why he is my favorite musical artist, hands down.

I feel like anyone who took heed to Kanye's transformations got a sneak peek at a bit of his soul. This is something that a lot of artists don't really reveal to their fans. A lot of fake smiles, stuntin' and city shout outs is expected from hip hop artists nowadays. Of course, to really see what it takes that composes someone's thoughts, that's what really makes an artist stand out. While the argument that Ye makes this a bit too simple, with flagrant outbursts of emotion that seem to pop up every year or so, it's still more than I've seen from a number of other people. I've seen rappers do some crazy things (coughCam'romcough) and I've seen rappers do some pretty inventive things (will.I.am. wtf?), but I've never seen anyone dominate so many different aspects of influence as Yeezy does. If it isn't obvious yet, I'm a fan boy of the Louis Vuitton Don, but I'm only showing my admiration so adamantly because of my issues as a young man making the transition from creative to conformist. I'm always going to be able to listen to Kanye, and I'm always going to be able to wear what I want when I party, but for the majority of my waking week, soon I won't have many options. However, Ye gives me inspiration in this department. The ability to bend barriers until they mold to my liking is what I want, and I know it's going to be a risky maneuver, but I know it's going to be worth it. There's nothing worse than the stifling of creativity. I'm limiting the topic to fashion either! Sure, dress codes are a welcome counteraction to uniforms, but at the same time, there are still strict rules that prevent out-of-the-box thinking. I don't want to be in a position where I can't even think the way that I want to, but it may get to the point that I will have to if I want to make something of myself. That's why I can look at Yeezy as inspiration. I don't want to become the non-rap equivalent of the Dem Franchize Boys. I don't want to become a cliche. I would much rather be an anomaly. Murder to excellence, right?

Saturday.

I went to the movies today. I was fortunate enough to see Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore and Ryan Gosling's most recent work of art: Crazy, Stupid, Love. It was a decent film, with Steve's usual self-pity humor taking its toll on the viewers of his film. Similar to He's Just Not That In To You, it is a story of everyone's experience with love and heart break. Holding a theme of a connection between two people as soul mates, there is an unusual enigma that seems to seep its way into the message of the film. While I don't plan to review or explain the film in any way, I instead wanted to focus on a theme that the film plays on wonderfully. Ryan Gosling plays a playboy character that knows his way around a night club. Having perfected the 'art of the man,' he embodies what any single man wants to be. Having the classic Bruce Wayne superpowers, he has the ability to: indecently wild charisma, incredible fashion sense, the body of Shawn T and a good Old Fashioned in his hand. While Ryan's always been a charmer, he seems to take it to a new level in this film. Contrasted with the dorky, swank-less Carell, Gosling shines with his ability to get what he wants, when he wants. While he's no Sean Connery, his womanizing skills would make him a stark competitor. This really makes me curious as to what it is that it takes to get to this level of he-man so as to be able to 'pick up' women.

Ryan Gosling

If you've seen the preview for the film, you'd quickly notice that Ryan Gosling's character is the single man's dream. It is a character like this that can pump up a single guy before going out on the town. It's a character like this that makes men actually care about what they wear, or how they look. There's a bit of Dave Chapelle philosophy that comes clear here. I used to hear women speak a lot about how they want men to just 'be themselves.' I'm not sure if that still takes precedence, but it certainly can't be true, no matter it's popularity. A man who is himself is often overpowered by a man who is not. By now, men have discovered what it takes to make themselves more appealing to women. While making one's body perfect is beneficial to himself, the obsession on rock hard abs, or bulging biceps comes from a woman's love for them. While fashion is something that a lot of men have a genuine love for, a lot of it comes from expressing themselves to people, including the women that they want to approach. This makes me question the true individuality of many men. Are we nothing more than what women have molded us into becoming? While Chapelle claims that we are the hunters, using bait to lure our prey into our cast, I might have to disagree. Instead of working out to attract women, I would suggest that women make us work out so that we can attract them. Are characters like Gosling created by women to make men fear for their ability to attract a woman? Possibly. Probably.

Either way, everyone benefits.

Monday.

I put a few things through the ringer today. In an attempt to shrink some of my clothes which have become a bit over sized, I came across a pair of pants that are mind blowing in their cool. A pair of black and white plaid pants, that are no doubt older than me. I've never word them for both their size, and their design. I love the pants, don't get me wrong, if I could I would wear them every other weekend with a white shirt and a suit hat, with a little feather on the brim. Yes, cheesy I know, but these pants are a testament to what style used to be. Perhaps you might notice, when looking at pictures of the 1960s, or 50s, men used to wear those hats with their suits. If you were outside, and you were wearing a suit, you were wearing a hat. If you didn't, you would be one of those new age hipsters that didn't know how to be a grown man. (or JFK) After typing this, I immediately think of the USA television program White Collar. The main character, Neal Caffrey, is often seen wearing a hat with his suits. Taking a new age approach on the classic tradition however leaves me to think that he looks a bit- silly, wouldn't you say? While I have never been a huge fan of fedoras, I've come to accept them in some social circles, however these social circles are not white collar work places. However when looking at old pictures of the common man, I have an appreciation of the accessory. I know, I'm spouting a river of contradictions, but I have a point, I swear.

A functional suit + fedora.

Some things take time. A few years back my brother was really in to wearing bow ties at the work place. While I had nothing to say to him back then, in retrospect I think that it was a pretty nifty idea. Substituting ties for bow ties takes a certain amount of skill that not just anyone can jump in to. The same goes for double breasted suits, pinstripes and certain liquors. I've always been an adamant believer that confidence is the most valuable accessory, but sometimes confidence just isn't enough. Get read for this, because I'm about to drop something heavy on you: Knowledge is more powerful than confidence. (School House Rock!) My brother knew what to wear bow ties with, as well as what colors work well together. He didn't go out and buy a random red bow tie and assume himself a fashionisto. I think it's very possible for someone to wear a hat with their white collar business attire, but knowledge of the accessory is absolutely key. With a combination of confidence and knowledge, it is possible to make just about anything possible, even outside of one's wardrobe. I mean, who was it that decided that thick brimmed glasses were cool again? I promise you it wasn't someone who was afraid to try new things. That's my soapbox speech of the week. Hope you have walked away ready to be adventurous!

Sunday.

The wonderful season of autumn is slowly creeping along the outskirts of the year to deliver a swift headbutt to our subconscious. While we are merrily entering the month of August, it is our final adieu to the summer before we rendezvous with September. While of course September isn't going to be causing us to pack up the shorts and tee shirts just yet, it is the harbinger for what we all know will be an immediate, blunt fall; a fall that I am incredibly excited for. Aside from autumn being my favorite of the four seasons, the fall of 2011 is something that I am very eager to endure. What's not to like? Neutral tones, casual scarves, sports coats, cardigans, auburn up the wazoo etc. Aside from just the arbitrary enjoyments of fall, there are also a few things to look forward to as well. A list of new music is likely to release this semester, which I have no doubt will be mind blowing. Albums from artists/groups such as CSS, David Guetta, Lil Wayne, VHS or Beta and Feist (omg) just to name a few, I can already tell that I'm going to be excited. Not to mention the plethora of enjoyable holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Veteran's day, autumn pretty much speaks for itself when it comes to being the best darn season there is. However, there are a few things in particular that I am looking forward to this season that I haven't really spoken to yet. Ironically, they both involve Kid Cudi.

Watching the video above will show you a sneak peek of what it is yet to come from the creative minds of Scott Mescudi, Cage and Shia LeBouf. While the premise of the short film has yet to be released, I have understood it to be a horror short based on the song by the two recording artists. With Shia taking the creative lead, he is exploring his capabilities as a director by taking us fans of the artists down a macabre road that no doubt will leave us wanting to leave the lights on. However, considering my absolute love for the song, I am no doubt going to find myself as addicted to it as I was to Kanye's own mini-movie, Runaway. It should be interesting to see the same concept of music-inspired film between two completely different minds. While I don't want to automatically compare Shia and Kanye, or Kid Cudi and Kanye, this project is going to ensure that we do it anyway. Now, as you can see, Maniac comes out in October of 2011, Halloween day in fact. However, Kid Cudi has yet another film project that will also be debuting in the month of October. One of my favorite television shows is rearing its head out of hiatus to give us a much anticipated return. How To Make It In America is coming back to show us just how Crisp is fairing after their restless attempts at making a name for themselves in the previous season. With more women, higher stakes and no doubt more swank, the second installment of the series is no doubt going to attract more viewers than the previous season. HBO has yet to disappoint me with an original series, and with such a down to earth series like HTMIIA, I'm already prepping myself for its awesomeness. Check out its teaser trailer below.

Thursday.

Every time I listen to the song Marvin's Room by Drake, it puts be in a weird mood. While I don't become depressed, furious or any form of being upset, I still feel a bit empty. I think the song makes me more eager than anything. While many of us can say that we've had our fair share of heart break, none of us can really relate to each other's emotion. However, whenever I hear Drake's voice proclaiming how he deserve's a girls love more than the one that she actually loves, it makes me think just how cool this guy is. The same goes for when I listen to any song by The Weeknd, (which you have to listen to if you haven't already!) or anyone else like them. When The Weeknd is talking about losing his girl to another girl in The Knowing, and how he's discovered her secret, but how he still loves her it just puts me in an emotional grind. As we all know, emotions are not 'cool.' It isn't cool to lose your girlfriend. It isn't cool to be lonely. Tears are not cool. However, the after effect is. Nowadays the brooding, dark and mysterious figures which populate the back of the bars, clubs and taverns are the ones that are the coolest. Falling into habit to fill some sort of void, that is something that we can deem cool though right? I don't know what it is that makes these people cool, but what  it shows us is that happiness is not 'cool.' Which sort of draws a rift between what it is that we want, and what it is that we need. (Haha, no pun intended.)

Anne-Catherine Frey... has no reason to be pictured here. I just want to be her friend. D=
Photo from A Truly Intriguing Subject.

I love my friends, many of them are like siblings to me, and I think that many of them are really 'cool.' At the same time, it was a process to become friends with them. It wasn't easy to become friends with a lot of them, while others was incredibly simple to befriend. I think their 'coolness' comes from their elusiveness. People are  animals, plain and simple. In the social jungle that we live in, being elusive allows one to protect themselves many times. Acting cold to strangers, and being unfriendly to most people prevents one from having to open up, or waste time on people that may either harm them or endanger them. It takes effort to befriend a 'cool' person. However, this self-defense system essentially sacrifices their friendliness. On one side we have being able to defend oneself from the tribulations that Drake and The Weeknd face in their songs, by being elusive and thus mysteriously cool. On the other side we have the opportunity to meet people who we want to befriend, and enjoy the company of people that we can trust. I've had many friends that have betrayed my trust. For that reason, it would make sense to limit my social circle, but it just makes my selection of 'real' friends rather small. There are very few people that really know the real me, and I like it that way. Of course, this isn't because of some sort of hidden aspiration to be the cool guy, but makes me seem either stoic or unemotional. The truth is, it takes effort to know me, and the same goes for anyone that knows the difference between a friend and an acquaintance. Obviously you wouldn't tell your entire life story to a person you meet at the store just so that they could be your friend, right? It takes time to open oneself up to other people. Media makes us believe that the harder it is to crack open that exterior, the cooler this person is, because they know the significance of solitude. Whether that's true is questionable, but I find it fascinating.
